BOB 2007

Does any one know who is going to BOB 2007? If the teams could give me some information about themselves I would like to post it here. I would like to know your views about your regional competitions. You can also send me other website information.

I am a member of the Berkeley raas team, Raas n Roll. We won GWA and we will be competing at BOB. Before I tell you about our team, I would like to share my views on Raas and competitions in the US.

Most of the performers are indian-american students who were either born or raised in America. So I feel it is kind of natural of us to incorporate a more different style of garba and raas than what it traditionally done in India. Even at normal garbas that we go to for Navratri, we do different moves than what my relatives and cousins do at their garbas in India.

Becasue of the way these competitions have evolved, energy and innovation have become staples of most teams' choreography. Energy, for example is stressed by all teams, and that is why we focus on head shaking and things like that, which may nto be purely traditional. But that is what wins competitions. We also try to innovate modern moves to distinguish ourselves from the competitors.

One thing I do not like about these raas competitions is how props and themes have become more and more prevalent. I feel these should not be a part of routines, but because there are scoring criteria for intro/outro/theme, we are forced to incorporate it.

About our dance and routine. We performed at DD in Michigan and GWA. We were very clean at Michigan, but i think it was our energy (aagain, high knees/head shaking, which are things you do not completely agree with) that separated us from the rest at GWA. We do have alot of non-traditional aspects of our routine, such as bhangra footwork, throwing dandiyas, etc., but our dance also has more difficult footwork (almost exclusively triple-stepping, unlike other teams) and more complex formations.

I think BOB will show a great contrast between the three teams competing. Ultimately, it comes down to preference of the judges as to who will win, but it will be a great show.

I am not sure who has replied to you in the past, but if anyone from Berkeley has written anything disrepectful, I would like to apologize on their behalf. We are really a great group of people, and I am proud to be a part of this team.

Thanks
